Hoplon AI gives growing businesses a complete security operation: the tools, and the agentic AI team that operates them.

For a growing UK startup, security requirements often arrive from several directions at once. One customer asks about ISO 27001. Another wants a SOC 2 report. A UK procurement process may require Cyber Essentials.

All three matter, but they solve different problems.

What is Cyber Essentials?

Cyber Essentials is a UK government-backed certification scheme focused on core technical security controls.

The scheme is built around five areas:

  • firewalls
  • secure configuration
  • security update management
  • user access control
  • malware protection

The NCSC positions Cyber Essentials as a practical baseline for protecting organisations against common cyber attacks, with specific support available for small and medium-sized organisations.

For many UK startups, Cyber Essentials is a practical first step when customers, insurers or procurement processes expect evidence of basic security controls.

Cyber Essentials Plus builds on the same requirements but adds independent, hands-on technical testing to verify that the controls are actually implemented and working effectively.

You can read more in our guide to Cyber Essentials for small businesses.

What is ISO 27001?

ISO/IEC 27001:2022 is an international standard for information security management systems, commonly referred to as an ISMS.

It covers more than individual technical controls. The organisation needs a structured process for managing information security risks, responsibilities, policies, controls and ongoing improvement.

ISO describes ISO/IEC 27001 as applicable to organisations of any size and sector and specifically provides guidance for establishing, implementing, maintaining and continually improving an ISMS.

For startups, ISO 27001 often becomes important when moving into larger customer accounts, regulated industries or international procurement processes.

Our guide to ISO 27001 readiness for startups covers the preparation process in more detail.

What is SOC 2?

SOC 2 is an assurance framework commonly requested from technology and SaaS companies, particularly when selling into the United States.

A SOC 2 examination looks at controls relevant to the AICPA Trust Services Criteria:

  • security
  • availability
  • processing integrity
  • confidentiality
  • privacy

The exact scope depends on the organisation and the commitments it makes to customers.

There are two main types of SOC 2 report:

  • Type I assesses whether controls are suitably designed and implemented at a specific point in time.
  • Type II assesses whether those controls operated effectively over a defined period, requiring evidence of ongoing security operations and consistent control performance.

Unlike ISO 27001, SOC 2 results in an independent auditor’s report rather than an ISO certification. AICPA describes SOC 2 reports as providing users with detailed information and assurance about controls at a service organisation.

For a UK SaaS company selling to US enterprise customers, SOC 2 can become a commercial requirement very early.

How do SOC 2, ISO 27001 and Cyber Essentials compare?

The easiest way to understand them is by looking at the business requirement each one typically addresses.

There is no universal order.

The right sequence depends on what customers and procurement teams are actually asking for.

Which one should a UK startup do first?

Start with the requirement closest to revenue.

If a customer requires Cyber Essentials before signing a contract, that becomes the immediate priority.

If larger customers repeatedly ask for ISO 27001 certification, building an ISMS may provide more commercial value.

If the business is a SaaS company expanding into the US and enterprise customers are requesting a SOC 2 report, SOC 2 may need to come first.

Before choosing, ask:

  • Which framework are prospects already requesting?
  • Which markets are you selling into?
  • Are security questionnaires delaying deals?
  • Are upcoming contracts dependent on certification or assurance?
  • Do you already have documented controls and evidence?
  • Will another framework be needed within the next 12 to 24 months?

This helps turn compliance planning into a commercial decision rather than simply following what other startups are doing.

Can one security programme support all three?

There is significant overlap in the underlying security work.

Access control, endpoint security, vulnerability management, policies, employee awareness and evidence appear in different forms across multiple frameworks.

This means a startup does not necessarily need to rebuild its entire security programme every time a new requirement appears.

Hoplon supports ISO 27001, Cyber Essentials and SOC 2 live within its Compliance module, while the wider security operation covers controls across areas including Endpoint Security, Email Security, Human Risk, Cloud DLP, Security Policies and External Exposure Monitoring.

You can explore the wider approach on the Hoplon Security & Compliance page.

How is Hoplon different from a standalone compliance platform?

Compliance evidence is stronger when it reflects what is actually happening across the organisation’s security environment.

Hoplon combines security operations and compliance in the same system.

The security controls being operated can contribute directly to the evidence used for compliance rather than relying solely on manually uploaded screenshots and documents.

For example, information from endpoints, identity systems, cloud services and security policies can contribute to a clearer view of whether controls are actually operating.

What if you are not ready for certification yet?

You can still start building the foundations.

Hoplon’s free-forever tier includes:

  • Cloud DLP
  • External Exposure Monitor
  • ISO 27001 toolkit
  • 180+ security policies

This gives growing teams a practical way to begin organising security controls and documentation before they are ready for a larger compliance project.

FAQ

Is SOC 2 better than ISO 27001?

Neither is universally better. ISO 27001 is an internationally recognised information security management standard, while SOC 2 provides independent assurance over controls relevant to the Trust Services Criteria. The more useful framework depends on customer and market requirements.

Does a UK startup need SOC 2?

There is no general requirement for UK startups to obtain SOC 2. It often becomes relevant when SaaS or technology companies sell to customers, particularly in the US, that request a SOC 2 report during procurement.

Is Cyber Essentials enough for enterprise customers?

That depends on the customer’s requirements. Cyber Essentials demonstrates implementation of a defined baseline of technical security controls, while larger procurement processes may also require ISO 27001, SOC 2 or additional evidence.

Does Hoplon support ISO 27001, SOC 2 and Cyber Essentials?

Yes. ISO 27001, SOC 2 and Cyber Essentials are live within Hoplon’s Compliance module.

What is the difference between Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus?

Cyber Essentials is a self-assessment certification covering five core technical security controls. Cyber Essentials Plus includes the same requirements but adds independent, hands-on technical testing to verify that the controls are effectively implemented.

Build the compliance foundation before the next request arrives

Cyber Essentials, ISO 27001 and SOC 2 serve different purposes, and growing businesses may eventually need more than one.

Building the underlying security controls and evidence properly makes it easier to respond as customer requirements evolve.
